As part of the actions of the researchers of the University of the Aegean, the Department of Shipping and Business Services of the School of Management announces the development of the project ‘NEORION’ – “Promotion of green maritime technologies and new materials to enhance sustainable shipbuilding in Adriatic Ionian Region” European Program ADRION – Interreg.
The research project concerns the shipping industry, which has always been a key economic sector in the Ionian and Adriatic regions, providing thousands of high-level jobs and opportunities for SMEs and larger companies such as shipyards.
These days the shipbuilding industry in Europe is facing intense competition coming mainly from Turkey, South Korea and China, where the shipbuilding capacity has increased exponentially.
Shipbuilding has also been profoundly affected by a lack of effective global trade rules and a lack of investment initiatives. The collapse in demand since 2008 has also had a significant impact on employment in this sector.
In order to strengthen the shipbuilding industry, the research project NEORION aims to create a transnational complex in the Adriatic-Ionian for the Green Shipbuilding industry and will accelerate both the cooperation of key players and innovation in the industry.
NEORION is expected to strengthen the traditional shipbuilding sector through coordinated efforts to facilitate the exploitation of innovative technologies and technology transfer between new complementary markets, such as new materials and special vessels.
